We all spend too much time inside. And who can blame us? It’s comfortable at home. It’s filled with plush sofas and comfy Nuknuuk slippers, with our indispensable electronic devices and worldly possessions. Then there is air conditioning, cold drinks and snacks. So yes, spending time indoors does sound good, especially when another heat wave is just around the corner.
But summer is here, and so is the pressure to go outside and reap the benefits of fresh air. According to multiple studies, spending time outside boosts our mental and physical health and wellbeing. And here is the good news: You don’t need to wander far to benefit from the great outdoors -- with just a few small adjustments to your daily routines, you can effortlessly increase the amount of time spent in the open air.
Here are our favorite activities to relocate out of doors in the summer:
1. Start The Day Off Right
When you get out of bed, slip into your comfy Nuknuuks, prepare your hot beverage of choice and sip it outside on the patio, balcony or in the backyard. Nuknuuk slippers feature handy indoor/outdoor soles made of lightweight and durable EVA, so you won’t have to deal with frantic shoe changes at the door. Just sip and relax. Repeat.
2. Strike A Yoga Pose In Nature
There is a reason why most yoga videos feature the beach, mountains or at the very least a lush green plant - yoga is all about connecting with nature and letting energy flow freely, creating balance and living in the moment. Now imagine taking your yoga practice outside, stretching under a blue sky, listening to the sounds of rustling leaves and birds as you connect your postures with your breath. Sounds amazing, right? It is! Grab your yoga mat and head outdoors - your body and mind will thank you. (If you prefer a class setting, you should be able to find an outdoor yoga class in your area).
3. Channel Your Outdoor Chef
Summer is barbeque season, and we love cooking outside… especially in our Nuknuuks! Not only does outdoor cooking prevent the kitchen from heating up too much, but food somehow always tastes better when coming from the barbeque. Try grilling up some new veggies, colorful skewers or even pizza!
The outdoor “kitchen” is also great for mixing salads, shucking corn and picking a nice herb bouquet to add fresh flavours to your dishes.
4. Ground Yourself With Meditation
Many people think of meditation as a difficult practice that forces you to sit still for hours and totally empty your mind. Not true. You can meditate while walking or lying in your hammock, and even a minute of mindful breathing has been shown to be beneficial to your health and wellbeing.
5. Don’t Fear The Mess
Summer is the perfect time to tackle those messy DIY projects that may involve sanding, painting, nailing, glueing and the like. You have tons of space and light outside, and you don’t need to worry about fumes or getting your floors dirty. Just make sure to check the weather forecast before setup and try to find a shady spot for longer projects.
6. Get Your Heart Pumping
Exercise is good for us - and being active outdoors is even better! Whether you go for a walk, a bike ride, a swim, a run or to play some sports with friends - any physical activity that increases your heart rate will do the trick.
Remember to stay safe: During heat waves, it’s best to exercise in the morning or late afternoon, or to find a refreshing pool or lake. Protect your skin with sunscreen lotion (minimum SPF 30). Use bug repellent when you go offroads, and check for ticks afterwards.
7. Take Your Hobbies Outside
Do you like to paint, play an instrument, knit, work on plane models or design your latest scrapbooking page? No matter what your hobby is, try a change of scenery and see how it affects your creativity. You don’t need to travel across town to do it -- you can even leave your Nuknuuks on! Just grab your equipment, step outside and find a new spot or angle to work with. Changing your surroundings also changes your mindset, so you might surprise yourself with some of the inspirational ideas that come to you if you take your hobby outside.
8. Expand Your Living Space
If your house ever feels tight when you invite people over, summer is the perfect time to entertain outdoors and enjoy your company in the open air. All you need is a table and chairs, cozy lighting and good friends. Let the fun begin!
